Edenvale started out in 1903 as a small settlement named Rietfontein which sprung up around the Rietfontein Gold Mine.

Today, Edenvale has become a very well known part of Johannesburg. Edenvale is located halfway between OR Tambo International Airport and Johannesburg City Centre, and thus provides a convenient base for the business traveler. Edenvale has the atmosphere of a peaceful town and one often forgets just how close it is to the city and all the bustling routes.

Edenvale is also host to the only ¾ copy of an original Dutch windmill in South Africa. The windmill is part of the "Bakkery", a well-known Dutch bakery offering all things Dutch combined with delightful South African offerings.
